Trench warfare

Trench warfare

Trench warfare was used to protect the soldiers from the gasses and gun fire. It was also used to try and make the gas explosions less effective.  But living in trenches wasn't so easy.

Trench foot.
In the trenches it was muddy and wet. Many of the soldiers got sick or had health problems. When the soldiers were in the trenches their boots and socks were almost always wet causing trench foot. Trench foot was when your skin started peeling off or your toes started coming off. It was horrible. but the soldiers who had this were sent home.

The trench rat.

In the trenches there were lots of bugs and things living in there but there were also trench rats. Trench rats were a fat rat that would go through the trenches and eat all the food and at night they would lick the cans and make lots of noise so it was hard for the soldiers to sleep. Sometimes the rats would even eat the toes of the soldiers.

To help with the trench conditions sometimes they would put boards down so that the soldiers were not always walking in mud or water, but not always it was very hard living in the trenches so most of the soldiers were in pain all the time. The soldiers that went home most likely died.

Life in the trenches was hard and had really bad conditions and just imagine what it would be like walking around with fungus growing off your feet or not being able to sleep at night because of big fat rats clashing cans together.
